4 Hidden gems in Southeast Asia

In recent years the number of visitors coming to South East Asia has skyrocketed, to the point where Bangkok was the most visited city in the world in 2016 with 21,470,000 visitors according to CN Traveler. As big, beautiful, and crazy Bangkok is, it’s not exactly a hidden gem. Even with the recent popularity of the region, there are still plenty of places that haven’t been affected by increases in tourism. These are some of the best-hidden gems of Southeast Asia.

Koh Lipe, Thailand

Southeast Asia Hidden Gems Koh Lipe

The furthest Southern island in all of Thailand it arguably the best-kept secret in Thailand. The remoteness of the island and difficulty to get here has likely contributed to its hidden gem status. Very few tourists who are Thailand island hopping make it all the way to Koh Lipe. From anywhere in Thailand it will take you more than half a day to get to Koh Lipe, but once you’re there you’ll understand why it’s worth the trip. The waters around the island look similar to places like the Seychelles or Koh Lipe is sometimes called the Maldives of Thailand. Of all the 300+ island in Thailand, this is a favorite of just about everyone that has visited Koh Lipe.

Coron Philippines

Southeast Asia Hidden Gems Coron Philippines

Often overshadowed by El Nido in the Philippines, Coron has some amazing sights too. One of the most picturesque spots in all of the Philippines can be found just a short ride from Coron Town. What Coron has that El Nido doesn’t is ship wrecks. At the bottom of the of the bay sits 9 sunken World War II shipwrecks. Situated at very diveable depths, these ships are worth the trip alone to the island of Coron. Located in a small cluster of islands north of the Palawan, Coron is equally as beautiful with less than half the tourists.

Hoi An, Vietnam

Southeast Asia Hidden Gems - Hoi An Vietnam

A short flight from the bustling Ho Chi Minh city, Hoi An seems worlds away. The peacefulness of this small central Vietnamese city is a much-needed relief after visiting the former Saigon. Lush green rice patties cover the landscape and there is no buzz from motorbikes as there seems to be in every other Vietnam cities. The food found in Hoi An is a reason enough for most to visit, eating was my favorite things to do in Hoi An.

Wakatobi, Indonesia

When most people think of Indonesia they automatically think of the beaches in Bali, which are amazing don’t get us wrong. But there are so many other hidden gems in Indonesia. Wakatobi Indonesia has some of the best diving in the world and the super friendly locals

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Attractions – So Much More to Discover

Emerging from the shadows of times gone by, the chaotic energy of Ho Chi Minh City is symbolic for how Vietnam is surging away from a history of communism and civil war. Renowned for an immense selection of cuisine, there is so much more to Ho Chi Minh than just the food. Here you will find a variety in every sense, from the hordes of tourists mingling with locals on hidden alleys, to the leafy parks right next to a modern high rise and thousands of scooters cluttering up the streets below.

First Impressions

When you first arrive in Ho Chi Minh even something as simple as crossing the road can seem like an impossible task and this is not to be underestimated. Of all of the great Vietnam destinations Ho Chi Minh City is by far the most chaotic. Hundreds of thousands of motorbikes seem to descend on the road at any time of the day. The locals make it look easy, but for the new arrivals, this can be a terrifying encounter. That said, there is also a candid enjoyment that comes with watching these locals passing on bikes and behaving exactly as they do in the Western world but without the privacy of an aluminum shield.

Another striking observation here is the combination of different cultures. Vietnam is still trying to distance itself from colonial and war times, it also acknowledges the diversity of cultures from these eras which are nevertheless part of what it has now become. From Korean theater groups and exotic spices to traditional music and a wide variety of foods available. It may appear to have a slightly confused identity at times but few other destinations around the world can claim such diversity as Ho Chi Minh.

. Turning left onto a narrow street and away from the noisy traffic, you can find solitude in the art galleries of Hai Ba Trung and the colorful facades of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai which seem the most unlikely places to find it given how close they are to the city center.

Whether you seek a quiet coffee or just an encounter with a lesser known part of the city, Ho Chi Minh has a few hidding spots. Although it may not seem like it, you can always find a small corner to escape the crowds. Another symbol for how much Ho Chi Minh has changed, that you can now find all manner of art, tradition and general expression in the same place it was banned not too long ago.

Tasting Ho Chi Minh

Hot bowl of Vietnamese Pho in Siagon

We should not forget that the food here is unrivaled in any part of Southeast Asia. Coriander rises through the air and another batch of prawns are placed on the grill, the side streets of the city are home to very unique experiences. It is almost a tradition in Vietnam for every last piece of pavement to be turned into a portable restaurant. Small metal tables and stools offer an intimate setting that never fails to delight visitors. Tasty bun cha, marinated pork, basil, mint, lime and golden pastries filled with vegetables. There is no end to the flavors and fusions which can be found in Ho Chi Minh while the above-mentioned dining experience is well worth the value alone.

Discovering Ho Chi Minh Attractions

Ho Chi Minh Attractions - Siagon Post office

Unfortunately, as fast as life seems to be moving here, it will never take away the years of heartbreak under the surface.  It takes time to uncover this reality or how the locals need no reminders of their awful past. It’s almost ironic that most tourists come to explore the remnants of a World War, when the natives want nothing more than to move on from it. That said, it does not take away from the experience, for few destinations have such a gripping history that needs to be told. A visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels or the War Museum is all you will need to confirm that.

Ho Chi Minh holds a deep sense of intrigue for the visitor. It looks good, it feels good and it tastes even better. However, it’s only as you are leaving when you seem to realize what makes this such a vibrant and mysterious city. It’s in this moment when you realize there must still be so much more left to discover.

7 Reasons Why the Philippines Is The Best Place On Earth

One of the most frequent questions we always get asked is “What’s your favorite place you’ve ever been?”. That’s a tough question. There are so many get places I’ve been choosing between them almost seems like you are betraying another favorite place. However there are always a few that come to mind as the best places I’ve visited, and the Philippines just about always makes the list.

The People

Thai people often get the title for the land of a thousand smiles and things like that, don’t get me wrong Thai people are great, but I found Filipinos to be among the friendliest I’ve come across on the road. English is widely spoken so communication is easy, but it’s more than sharing a common language. The people of the Philippines are just genuine and friendly people. They had a big impact on my travels there.

El Nido

el nido phil

Yes, one specific part of the country makes the list on why the Philippines is the best place on earth. El Nido is that beautiful. The rock formations surrounded by turquoise waters is reason enough to visit the Philippines. There are some many things to do in El Nido you may never want to leave, at least I didn’t.

The Food

The Filipino food sometimes gets a bad wrap, but if you give it a real try there are actually some really good dishes. The ever popular chicken adobo is pretty tasty, but there’s more good stuff than just that. In the kitchen, you’ll see a big influence from the Spanish colonial times with dishes like paella being popular here too.

The Diving

diving phil

The underwater world of the Philippines is hard to match and is frequently listed as some of the best diving in the entire world. Even with the thousands of dive sites scattered around the Philippines, there are probably some reefs that are yet to be discovered.

Friendly Guest Houses

Another aspect of traveling to the Philippines that makes it great are the little guest houses you find on these far-flung islands. You meet some of the most interesting people and colorful owners. The make you feel like family and make the experience that much better

The Landscapes

The overused statement of “breathtaking” doesn’t even begin to describe some of the stunning landscapes found throughout the Philippines. Be prepared to pick your jaw off the ground after your first trip.

Sunsets

Sunset phil

Being an island nation the Philippines sunset game is pretty darn strong. Be prepared to be dazzled by a nightly show of colors as the sun sinks into the sea at the end of the day.

These are just a few of the thousands of reasons why the Philippines is the greatest place on earth! What’s your favorite reason?

Top 5 European Stag Weekend Destinations

If you’re responsible for organising an unforgettable stag weekend for your mate before he gets hitched, the pressure is on. Getting the adventure, relaxation and debauchery balance down pact can be a massive effort. If you’re planning a stag do, the first (and most important) decision is where. Your stag weekend destination has to offer the scenery, weather, and opportunities your stag needs and loves. If party planning isn’t your thing, we’ve made things easier for you by listing some of Europe’s best stag destinations and what you’d go to them for.

Here are the top 5 European stag weekend destinations, in no particular order.

Magalluf, Mallorca

Photo by: Rafael Ortega Díaz – Wikipedia Creative Commons

Magaluf is a party paradise. This island attracts droves of young partying travelers with its pristine beaches, warm weather, water sports and 24/7 clubbing scene. There’s not much else to Magaluf except for getting messy for as long as you can stomach it, and nursing your inevitable hangover with some hair of the dog on the beach. If your stag lives for the summer and never says no to a big night out, head to Magaluf.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is well known for its rich culture, its special coffee shops (where you can get buzzed on more than just caffeine) and thriving red light district. If you’re not feeling too rough in the mornings, take a stroll or bike ride around the city, and hit the cafes for some stimulation. If it’s your thing, go on a tour of the red light district in the evening and get involved if the mood strikes you.

Budapest, Hungary

If you and your mates are looking for a classy, but also hedonistic experience, head to Budapest. Check out the famous architecture by day, waste hours at their pinball museum, and dress your best for wine cellar and bar hopping by night. The language barrier can make organising things a bit of a chore, so you might want to recruit professional help when organising a stag do in Budapest.

Andorra

If you’re more about bonding with your mates over snow sports and affordable shopping amongst beautiful landscapes, the tiny principality of Andorra is perfect for you. Andorra boasts some of the world’s best ski resorts, and as a tax-haven it also has some of the best duty-free shopping. Head to the slopes for a full day of shredding, wrap it up with drinks by the fire at night, and in the following day, improve your stag crew’s aesthetic with some retail therapy.

Berlin, Germany

If the honour of organising your mate’s stag has been bestowed upon you, go hard or go home. Organise a stag weekend in Europe and blow your stag’s mind before he settles in for the long haul.

Photo Roulette Round #99 Spiritual Beauty

Thanks to Josie from Housesitting Travel for picking me as the winner of round 98 of Photo Travel Roulette. The theme was ‘Whats your angle’, and the winning picture was from foot level of one the many gulls that circle the shores of Essaouira, Morocco during one of the city’s nightly bright yellow sunsets.

So it’s now my duty to start off the next round of Travel Photo Roulette and choose a theme. With Easter just behind us and a number of other religious festivals in the coming months, I thought it would be fun to see everyone’s best shots of religious practices. Something beautiful that you have come across on your travels from any religion in the world. So Round 99’s theme is ‘Spiritual Beauty’.

Show me your best shot of a religious festival, a Church, Temple, Mosque, or any other religious building. Or… if you aren’t that in touch with your spiritual side show me a photo of a place so beautiful that it made you question your existence or made the world feel huge.

The contest will be open for entries until Monday April 13th 8am EST. The winner will be announced shortly after.

How to Enter Travel Photo Roulette #99

The Winner will be announced shortly after the contest closes on April 13th.

Travel Photo Roulette Contest Overview

The contest rotates through travel/photography blogs, so the winner of the previous round of Travel Photo Roulette hosts the subsequent round on their own blog. The new host then chooses the next theme (a generic keyword or phrase) and bloggers submit their interpretations of the theme over the course of the week of the contest.

At the end of the week, the hosting blogger chooses their favorite photo from the submissions and displays it as the week’s winning entry. They then include direction to the new host for the next round. Readers can attempt to sway the author into picking a certain photo via comments, but the author can ignore comments as they see fit. The game is repeated with the winner hosting the following week’s game and choosing a phrase for new photo submissions.

Feel free to share this post on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Trover and StumbleUpon so more people can join the contest – make sure to use the hashtag #PhotoRoulette

Travel Photo Roulette Guidelines

  • Please try and keep your images medium-sized and web-optimized.
  • If you win, keep these in mind when choosing a new theme: Keep phrases general so that all bloggers can participate. Specific items like “Eiffel Tower” should be avoided but rather made open-ended like “monuments.” For variety, it is okay to say focused things such as “monuments at night” which most of us have pictures of. Phrases can be generic ‘signs’, or abstract ‘religion’

“One of my favorite photos comes from the Holy Ganges of India. Locals and travelers alike come to this river for the spiritual benefits, but for rowers who take those on pilgrimage over to the opposing river banks, it is just business as usual.”

Entry #2  Josie at Housesitting Travel

“An ancient carved stone from the ruins in Troy, Turkey. Whenever I’m in the presence of long-ago craftsmanship and art, I feel the spirits of the hands that created it. I love to place my hand on the stones and know other ancestral hands touched the same spot.”

Entry #3 Juergen at Dare2Go

“My submission for this round is possibly overwhelming the senses… Everywhere you look you find something new to discover in the small “Church of Santa María Tonantzintla”, found in the town of Cholula, outside Puebla in Mexico. It is an indigenous church, all decorated by indigenous artists. Construction started in the 17th century and was finally finished in the 20th century. Every surface in this small church is covered with colourful or gilded stucco work, often depicting scenes from the native Nahuatl beliefs of the Aztec. Even its name “Tonantzintla” is derived from an old Aztec goddess.
[I don’t know if it falls under ‘beauty’ to the western eye, but it is certainly very unique and surprising.]”

My days were spent studying, my afternoons spent dodging military checkpoints and breaking curfew. On the weekends, I would visit the Boudhanath Stupa for prayers and meditation. Looking back on that period, it was the most spiritual time in my life. Now, nearly 20 years later, I often reflect back on that time.”

Entry #7 Carole from Travels With Carole

“You don’t always need to leave your own area in order to find an amazing spiritual spot. Sagely City of Ten Thousand Buddhas is just up the highway from me in Ukiah, California. It is one of the first Buddhist temples and monasteries built in the U.S., it operates on the grounds of a former state mental hospital. The temple (in the former gymnasium) has walls lined with perhaps 10,000 golden Buddha figurines in various sizes, and good-timing presents the opportunity to witness chanting.”

Entry #8 Brittany at The Trading Travelers

“My photo for “Spiritual Beauty” was taken at Prasat Bayon temple in the Angkor Archaelogical Park. It is one of my favorite photos and memories from our time at Angkor. We were enjoying a few peaceful moments away from the crowds as we were exploring the maze-like galleries when we happened upon a Monk who seemed to be doing the same. We shared just a brief moment together but it is one that we will remember the rest of our lives.”

Entry #9  Suzanne at The Travel Bunny

“Vietnamese people leave offerings and prayers for their deceased ancestors at little shrines which you’ll find in shops and restaurants or by the door of a shop. We found this one wedged into a gnarled tree and filled with chrysanthemums and incense sticks in Hoi An, Vietnam.”

Entry #10 Brandon at The Yoga Nomads

“Kids are full of wonder and born without judgement. Maybe we can learn something from them? We met these two cuties outside a small temple in Bagan, Myanmar. We played with them for a few hours and left excited about life.”

“After Minyma Kuniya defeated Wati Liru, her spirit combined with her nephew’s and together became Wanampi (water snake). Wanampi lives here today and has the power to control the source of this precious water” Traditional Owner – Anangu (prounounced: arn-ung-oo) people, Uluru, Central Australia

 Entry #12 Suzanne at Boomeresque

“My photo was taken at a Buddhist monastery in Luang Prabang, Laos. We came upon these student monks resting between classes and meditation sessions in the courtyard. In Laos, many men study Buddhism at a monastery for at least some period of their lives. We learned that poor families are more likely to deliver their young sons to the monks for training because it is the only way they can receive more than a rudimentary education. One of the students in the photo appears to be quite young. In Luang Prabang, one often sees monks and students in their distinctive garb in the streets and each morning they receive alms of rice from the townspeople.”
